Oops…almost complete. You forgot one important item. Travel Insurance!

How many times have you booked a trip and skipped over this section? Perhaps you are looking to save a little money or assume your current car, credit card, or health insurance will keep you covered while you are away. Although your current insurance policies may keep you protected under certain circumstances while traveling domestically, it is vital to check all policies and terms to ensure that you are covered domestically AND internationally. Travel insurance is a valuable commodity that should not be compromised when securing your excursion. With the impact that COVID-19 has made with foreign and domestic travel, this serves as just one example why travel insurance is an essential must go item that should be included in your travel plans.

Well, how do you know which type of travel insurance is best for you?

Great question. Difficult answer.

There are a variety of travel insurance options that will best fit your needs. Here is a snapshot of what different travel insurance options provide. You must decide, based on your research and travel requirements the insurance package that is suitable for you!

· Comprehensive Package- Comprehensive insurance package plans provide coverage for cancellations, interruption, natural disasters, medical emergencies, lost, stolen and delayed baggage. This type of plan is most popular since it will cover most of your travel needs. Package plans are great for those who are looking to take a cruise, domestic or foreign travel, and anyone who is looking for protection in case a trip is cancelled.

· Travel Health Insurance- Travel health insurance provides protection in the event of medical emergencies, accidents, and emergency evacuations. Travel medical insurance is essential for traveling abroad as most domestic health coverage, that is provided by your employer, will not provide coverage should you encounter an accident or medical emergency while traveling abroad.

· Medevac- Think emergency evacuation. Medevac insurance provide coverage for emergency medical situations and international security evacuations. These services protect you if you need to go to the nearest hospital or return home. Medevac services are idea for those looking to travel to a remote location, foreign travel, or anyone concerned with emergency evacuation cost.

· Travel Accident Insurance- Heaven forbid that you would succumb to an accident that resulted in death. However, I have encountered this experience with a friend and colleague who lost their life while traveling abroad. Travel accident insurance are for those frequent travelers that are concerned about life insurance. If you currently have a policy, double check the terms to ensure that you are covered no matter where you are!

When exploring the world, especially as a solo traveler, of course you want to create an experience with the best intentions in mind. However, you must be prepared in case those well-meaning intentions equate to a not so favorable outcome. Travel insurance, like any insurance policy, will provide a sense of comfort knowing that you are prepared should something not go as planned. Do your homework and select an insurance policy that is best for you.

The big thing I've learned about travel insurance is know if you will be reimbursed for things covered OR it will cover cost from the start. This is important because you may NOT be able to pay the medical costs up front so the insurance is kind of a waste in that respect.
